Varet necklace now in the shop. I have been naming each piece of jewelry after streets in Raleigh but after three years I was running low. Now I'm naming them after streets and Brooklyn and its like a whole new realm of possibility.

Today is my first day of classes- wish me luck. It feels sort of weird to be in school again. Design school in NC started with a million cookouts (entire pigs roasted on grills the size of cars) and fashion school in New York started with lectures on eating disorders so this should be interesting.

I'll also be posting a few shots from my new hood in Park Slope (home of a thousand strollers), if I can ever find my card reader. All (most) of my belongings successfully fit into 90 sq ft but finding them is still a challenge. The moving sale will continue for another week to clear out some space in my new studio (tiny nook). Hope everyone is having a lovely week. Summer seems to be fading fast.

While packing up my worldy possession I came across a slew of pieces that had been in hiding. In an effort to fit said worldy possessions into 90ish square feet everything is posted in my shop and all prices have been reduced. Some of these items I thought we long ago sold out. Shipping is still complimentary in the US so stock up. I'll be posting fewer pieces for a while after the move but things should pick up once I get settled into student life again. Wish me luck!

The new Loeffler Randall ready to wear line sheets are up on their site. It looks like Beanie + Cecil and Vermillion will carry the line in Raleigh. Just like their accessories the look is sculptural but wearable. The color palate is more subdued though, focusing on muted creams and grays (with a hit of plaid and gold lame!). The Bell and Butterfly dresses are standouts and the Fraulein Blouse looks like it could go into heavy rotation this fall.

The past few weeks have been a little crazy. I've been packing, unpacking, repacking. I trekked to New York during last weeks heat wave to hunt for an apartment via dc and Baltimore and trains, buses, subway, foot and cancelled planes. The next few weeks will be more of the same but posting should be more regular once I get settled. Here are some shots from the train, the Baltimore harbor and the Brooklyn Botanical gardens. Decor8 has an slideshow of the Urban Outfitters Corporate Campus in Philadelphia posted on her blog. Previously abandoned buildings in the Navy Yard have been reborn as a work space that could only foster creativity. Those windows alone would be enough for me. Having watched local (albeit much smaller rehabilitation projects i can only imagine what a large undertaking it was. But how can a creative company be creative in an office park? I have just updated my shop with a few pieces for early spring. Click here to check them out. Also new to the blog is the mini shop to the right where you can get a peak at what is currently in the shop. For spring I am using is a lot of gold chain, freshwater pearls in dewy neutrals and even making a few bracelets. The chain bracelets are made entirely of vintage materials- no new clasps, jump rings, wire, nothing. Chain is everywhere right now so these are the perfect everyday spring signature pieces.

I heard on the radio that someone has decided that January 22 is mathmetically the most depressing day of the year due to lack of sunshine, mounting Christmas debt and the realization that New Years resolutions have come and gone unrealized. Here is the antidote: lovely hanging springlike things.

Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger's Falling Garden at the San Staë church on the Canale Grande gor the 50th Biennial of Venice in 2003. I love their story : The Doge (Mocenigo) needed a church so as to be able to have a monumental tomb built for himself, the church (San Staë) needed a saint so as to be able to be built, the saint (San Eustachio) needed a miracle so as to be pronounced a saint, the miracle needed a stag in order to be seen, and we built the garden for the reindeer. The visitors lie on the bed above the doge’s gravestone, and the garden thinks for them.

Recent finds for today:

Atelier Lzc is a French design firm creating home goods from wallpaper to tea towels. Their vibrant overlapping patterns use bright colors and playful motifs. Highlights are the steel shapes and notebooks. A few of the tea towels, the steel flowers and birds are available from Rose and Radish.

Amy Sedaris has a few hilarious things for sale at Fred Flare right now. Who wouldn't want an Amy Sedaris fake cake Valentienes day? My sister gave me her I Like You, Hospitality Under the Influence book for Christmas and I have to say its very useful. A few recipes I haven't had time to try yet are in her Munchies section:

Happy new year. I'm back in the studio this week sending out recent orders, restocking the office and putting together work for the Spring collection. I hope everyone had a great holiday- doing great things or not much of anything. I got a chance to slow down a little bit. I started Zadie Smith's On Beauty and some great books from Lark. Later this week I'll be adding a few new necklaces that made it through the Christmas season.

My furious elf-like jewelry making has come to a low boil for the rest of the year. Now I am wrapping, baking, sipping and loving my Fraser Fir. It reminds me of driving around Western North Carolina where sometimes all you can see are rolling hills and mountains dotted with thousands of trees just waiting for Christmas. Now I just have to decorate it.

This week has been a little insane. My studio and apartment look as though a jewelry tornado flew in. I have been getting all my ducks in a row and making a few new pieces for my holiday trunk show on Sunday at Vin. My camera has officially died so no preview pictures...you'll just have to stop by.

This Sunday I will be participating in a Raleigh Christmas tradition: The Boylan Heights Art Walk. Their website has a list of artists as well as a printable map for wandering. Over 100 artists display and sell their work from porches, homes and studios. This is a wonderful opportunity to stroll through an historic neighborhood and shop for special gifts for the holidays. From 1 to 5 pm I will set up outside Rebus Works on Kinsey Street (its almost under the bridge) selling work from my collection. I just made a new batch of Morrison earrings that are the perfect holiday gift. They are $26 for small and $48 for the large. Don't forget to check out the Penland exhibit as Rebus. Penland definatley influenced my work and the postcard for the show is pretty fabulous.

Holidays at k. talis

Whew... it isn't even December yet and the holidays are getting to me. The making, wrapping, packaging, posting and shopping are in full effect here. I am ready for the parties, sweets, cooking and lounging about portion of the holiday season to begin.

I have been asked lately about the best way to get your hands on some k. talis goods. I just added some work from my most recent collection to my store. I will continue adding work over the next few days. All jewelry is gift wrapped and shipping in the US is complimentary so shopping online is painless. I tried going to the mall the other day..didn't quite make it in. It seems weird that Urban Outfitters is in suburban North Carolina. But I digress. If you would like to ship your purchase directly to its recipient just let me know and I can include a note.

If you are in the Raleigh area you another option. On Sunday December 10th from 4pm to 6pm my entire collection will be available for purchase at one of my favorite places in Raleigh, Enoteca Vin. Ornament fun

I just finished sewing and packing up my ornaments for the Holiday Ornament Swap. These were made with vintage chandelier crystals, enamel flowers and vintage leaves. Hung on silk and satin ribbon for the holidays but cut the ribbon off and hang it on a chain and you have yourself a pretty little necklace. Eight woman around the world will get their own unique ornament. I just sent mine off and received my first ornament in the mail today.

I just took down the installation of my Fall collection in Goodman's Lady Shop and thought I would share a few snapshots. It was the fourth biannual HL show: HL odd place. I took these quickies last week so they are a little blurry but my friend Lindsey of Lindsey Marla photography took some great shots I'll post later. The mannequins in the installation were all in the store and were just moved around a little for the show. We kept the interior of the space as is and people seemed to really love being in such a unique space. The jewelry is inspired by the colors and details of the space, buttons, sewing odds and ends and vintage floral patterns. Enjoy!

2007 calendars

It is that time of year again. Shopping for everyone on your list can be a drag. But resist the urge to go to the mall. I've looked for the best handmade AND affordable gifts to give and get. First up are the calendars. They are fun because you can buy one for yourself too without feeling too greedy. I really like artists and designers are coming out with such great limited edition calandars now. You can retire the Cathy one from last year.

Thirteen prints held together with binder clips this color inkjet calendar is printed 4 x 4" on archival paper. From Bethany Designs. The prints are $18.

The two calendars above are from Limescreen. The limited edition seriagraph posters have two different images printed on 11 x 23.5" white cover stock. The calendars are on the bottom so at the end of the year chop them off and keep the print. At $10 each they are perfect for to hang in your office.

Letterpress is everywhere right now. The tactile quality of it is like nothing else. This limited edition calendar from ilee has a different letterpressed image for each month. It comes with a clear jewel case to sit on your desk but I think it would be nice on the wall. One year of deer and flower cuteness for $17.

Swedish artist Camilla Engman's offset printed and wire-bound calendar is a work of art. She also has very affordable prints available on her website. The calendar is 6.3 x 11.7 inches and $24.

Last but not least is San Fransisco ceramicist Diana Fayt's calendar. Offset printed in Japan on Japanese paper it has a hole at the top to hang on the wall. $28

Wary Meyers

Wary Meyers recently had work in Time Out New York Magazine. They hunted for furniture in the dumpsters and alleys of New York. Armed with not much more than paint, fabric and a little funk they transformed it into must have pieces. Now I don't how one finds an Eames chair in the trash but that's cool. Their interiors seems to use a lot of reworked finds that I am loving. I have some meal chairs that are just dying for some aqua enamel now. Check out their installation in Rockefeller Center. 15,000 marshmellows are involved. That is one chubby bunny.

new HL show

The HL Roaming Gallery, a biannual exhibit of Raleigh artists, is resurfacing in a new space this November. New work by Tracy Spencer, Andy Heymann, Jeremy Hauch, Sean Vance, Dimitri Gudgenov, Mollie Earls, and myself will be on display at 20 E. Hargett Street, Downtown Raleigh, in the Goodman Building (at the corner of Hargett and Wilmington Streets).

Opening Reception November 3rd from 6pm to 11pm.
Second Reception November 17th, 6pm to 11pm.

Above is a shot of the space we are using and it worth seeing just for the interiors. I will be using the mannaquins shown for an installation that I am very excited about. I don't think they will mind so much.
I don't think they have had any attention in a while.

I just dropped off a box of very leafy jewelry with Breigh at Revolver this afternoon. If you haven't been to Revolver it is on Fairview Road in Raleigh's Five Points. Vintage belts, Prada shoes, Twinkle sweaters, a million jeans and k. talis jewelry are all in one place. The Morrison earrings (top) have tiny vintage gold leaves for fall. The new Charmed, I'm Sure necklace (below) have these great vintage enamel leaves. I bought them with something totally different in mind but they were way too big. So here they are. The Morrison earrings are $26 and the necklaces are $38.

This silkscreened poster from Tracy Jenkins at village is getting tons of press right now. Her first edition of the print was featured in Domino and Elle Decor in designer Jessie Randall's chic Brooklyn apartment. At $10 the at edition has sold out , however she has come out with a second edition in two colorways. The pink one really needs to come home with me. After hunting down this print I decided that having one wall in my apartment decorated may not cut it. Prints are a really affordable way to bring some funk in the house. I have been trying to figure out who made this little fish vase since I bought it in Vienna a few years ago. The marking on the bottom is a little wonky and I couldn't read it. Thanks to a lot of blog press the designer is getting recently I found it was made by Vienna artist Sandra Haishberger for Feinedinge. The textured and pierced pieces are pretty killer.

Following a link from Decor8 I found these hilarious paper doll from Egg Press. These limited edition prints are modeled after the owner's dog Pearl. You can find Pearl's bio here. She must be very important. Catch the series for $38. Corchetta the Chihuahua isn't very good with other dogs. Maybe I could break her in slowly with these.

Happy Monday. I bought lots of great finds at the flea market this weekend, including the amazing boxes on the left. They originally held jewelry findings in a jewelry manufacturing warehouse in Providence. A lot of the reclaimed vintage pieces that I use came from the same place so I thought it was only fitting that I have them. The finding nailed to the outside corresponds with what is stored inside. To top it all off some of the boxes still had findings in them. I also picked up some more dipped gold leaves, vintage buckles and escutcheons. The pretty scroll pieces are from a friend's trip to a Prague flea market.

While fashion week is always a fun distraction, this season I am especially loving the Sartorialist's coverage of street looks. He is shooting the shows for style.com but his personal blog is even better. I love this look from his site. The blue! The red!

SCAD style

The other day at nested I saw some great notebooks from SCAD's Working Class Studio. This is a venture where students produce a contemporary home accessories and lifestyle line. I hadn't checked out shopSCAD's website in a while and there are some finds there too. The store itself has a huge variety of one-offs, paintings, jewelry, handmade sketchbooks and accessories. Located in an old building in downtown Savannah shopSCAD is well worth the trip. When I was there last year I picked up a Posey bracelet from Kathryn Riechert. The online store has a well edited version of the store and the collection from the Working Studio is a great example of how design schools can give students a taste of the working world. I may just take a little weekend Savannah trip soon. Maybe it won't be eight thousand degrees if I go in October instead of July. And I can see Ashley of Newsham.

Summer into Fall

One of my favorite things about this time of year is organizing all the bits I have amassed over the Summer. Lately I've been taking stock of trips, using sketches to start designing my next collection and cataloguing recent photographs. I just came across pictures from my trip to Cape Cod. The weather is so mild there that the hydrangas and lilies grow into amazing giant bushes. The rain looked great on these blooms as I woke up one morning.
Here are a few nice architectural shots. Who would have thought the JetBlue terminal could hold its own next to the Brooklyn Bridge?

I also found a brochure from the Schmuck 2006 International Contemporary Jewelry exhibit at the Museum of Art + Design. The combination of 'low' materials and found objects with traditional stones and metals seemed to be a big trend. This brooch by Annamaria Zanella uses paper mache and precious metals.

I also caught the Eames exhibit going on downstairs. The graphic design of their posters and event invitations struck me even more than the furniture. They used a lot of line drawings and a really bold orange. Film clips showed the couple's creative process and their personal correspondence showed their unique collaboration. My favorite piece was a letter written from Ray to Charles while he was traveling to Paris. It was part love letter and part wish list. The list was complete with store adresses, colors and sizes. I'm working on a lot of new things for Fall but I thought a good place to start would be my studio. A late Summer cleaning binge turned into setting up weird little still lifes all over the apartment. Cleaning out the studio lead to cleaning out the website.
